New Jersey Transit has disciplined 10 employees after it installed GPS tracking in its vehicles to eliminate fraud and abuse.
Three of the employees were fired and one was suspended for 30 days.
NJ Transit outfitted 480 vehicles with GPS technology in the winter of 2013.
Spokesman John Durso Jr. tells The Record newspaper all 10 of the employees who were disciplined had violated NJ Transit's policy against taking the vehicles for personal use.
Durso says the agency has seen a drop in usage and in gasoline.
“This is a savings of 2,215 gallons of gasoline during these periods measured,” he told the paper.

Durso says the fleet logged nearly 109,000 hours from January to March of 2013, compared with 68,069 hours for the same three-month period in 2014. Fuel usage dropped from 9,314 gallons to 7,099 for the period.
