Dump Truck Overturns, Closes Highway

Crash closes northbound Del. 1 at Pole Bridge Road

A dump truck crash closed northbound Del. 1 at Pole Bridge Road near Boyds Corner in New Castle County this morning.

According to Delaware State Police, the truck swerved to avoid a Ford Flex pulling onto the road from the shoulder just before 5:15 a.m. Wednesday and spilled its load of sand on the roadway. Dump truck driver Joshua Thompson, 25, of Smyrna, Del. was treated for minor injuries. The Flex driver Ted Schaum, 75, of Viola, Del. wasn't hurt, according to investigators.

Emergency crews were still diverting all traffic off of the highway at Pole Bridge Road by 8 a.m. The detour was set up to allow cars to return to the northbound roadway.

The cleanup and investigation took more than three hours keeping northbound Route 1 closed. The roadway was finally reopened around 9 a.m., according to Delaware State Police.

Police issued Schaum citations for failing to yield and not having insurance information in the vehicle.
