Drivers headed to the Delaware beaches will find the state is working hard to improve State Route 1, a major route to the shoreline. But with construction comes traffic, so the Delaware Department of Transportation has some advice for getting through it.
The "Making Strides to Improve Your Ride" campaign will have long-term benefits for drivers, including eliminating several traffic signals and three new overpasses. These benefits don't come without inconveniences, however-- three projects along SR 1 at Little Haven, South Frederica and Thompsonville Road were active construction zones.
On Friday evenings and weekends, DelDOT is suspending construction at the three points to keep traffic moving to and from the beaches. During the week, one lane in both directions is expected to remain open at all times.
DelDOT tells travelers to consider planning their drive times mid-week to avoid rush-hour traffic Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. On Saturdays, people should avoid traveling during 10 a.m. check-in and 2 p.m. check-out times.
Travelers can also download the DelDOT App on their smartphones to view traffic cameras, travel times, delays and advisories. Drivers can listen to DelDOT's Traffic Information Station WTMC 1380 AM.
If you need a break from driving, DART's Route 305-Beach Connection service operates during the weekends and holidays starting Friday May 27 through Labor Day.
