Speeding SUV Slams Into Asphalt Truck Along South Jersey Road, Killing 1

A sports utility vehicle slammed into a tanker truck leaving one driver dead and causing police to block off a busy South Jersey road for hours Monday morning.

Police said it appeared that the SUV traveling at a high-rate of speed in the southbound lane crashed into the truck along Delsea Avenue (Route 47) near Almonesson Road in Westville, Gloucester County around 3 a.m..

The SUV's driver died instantly, according to investigators. At first police said the driver was 26 but they later said they weren't sure since the man carried a fake ID with him.

The truck driver wasn't hurt and remained on the scene. He cooperated with investigators, police said.

Police warned motorists to expect the road to be closed in both directions for some time. They finally cleared the scene shortly before 7 a.m.

Investigators brought in a sweeper truck to clean up debris at the scene. They also planned to impound both vehicles in hopes of figuring out more about the crash.

Police said that they tanker normally would be carrying asphalt but that it was empty at the time of the crash.
