Woman Backing Up Convertible Dies in New Jersey Highway Crash: State Police

A woman backing up her convertible died in a two-vehicle collision along a North Jersey highway.

The crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. Thursday on Route 287 southbound, near mile-marker 55.9 in Wanaque, said New Jersey State Police.

Authorities said a woman driving a convertible apparently was backing up on the roadway's shoulder when she lost control of the car and it entered the traffic lanes. It was then struck by a sport utility vehicle with four people inside.

Medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The four people in the SUV were treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation Thursday.

Some lanes in the area where the crash occurred were shut down for several hours, causing some traffic delays for holiday travelers.
