Amtrak: Pets Welcome Aboard Some Trains

Riding the rails? You can now bring your furry best friend along.

On Monday, Amtrak began allowing passengers on some Northeast routes to bring along their pets.

Under the program announced Thursday, passengers can take a cat or small dog on trips up to seven hours long. Pet owners will have to pay an extra $25 to make a reservation.

The service is available Boston to Lynchburg, Newport News and Norfolk, VA on the Northeast Regional line and some New England routes.

“We have listened to our passengers looking for other transportation options while traveling with their pets,” said Amtrak president and CEO Joe Boardman. “We are pleased to bring this pilot program to the region.”

Pets will have to be in carriers and the carrier must weigh no more than 20 pounds with the animal inside. Pets must also be at least 8 weeks old and have all their vaccinations.

No word yet when it could come to Philly.
