“Zhu” Be Damned Trying to Find These Guys

Zhu Zhu Pets are the toys of the 2009 holiday season

Some little fur balls are causing a stir this holiday season.

In the spirit of Furbies and Tickle Me Elmo another furry battery-operated toy is on more Christmas lists than on toy shelves.

Good luck finding a Zhu Zhu Pet on Black Friday. We know -- NBC Philadelphia’s own Tim Furlong searched high and low for the tiny hamster toys but came up empty.

It seems like the company didn’t make enough of the inexpensive robotic hamsters. And that is making online sellers who got their hands on one some extra dough.

The lack of supply amidst feverish demand drove the price of the toys up. The toys retail for less than 10 bucks but were going for as much as $60 a pop on Philadelphia’s Craigslist.

But, why is there such fervor over little robotic rodents?

Who knows really but the whole thing is pretty annoying.

And, if you really want to get annoyed, check out the opening video on the Zhu Zhu Pets Web site.

Can’t one of these days the hot toy of the season be something that isn’t maddening?
