The MTV Video Music Awards turned 25 Monday night. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, the show was held in New York City and the host was Russell Brand.
As far as fashion goes, the show was more about controversy than couture (Kayne West/Taylor Swift’s), and accordingly, the attention was on the ladies in red.
Taylor Swift started the night in a silver, beaded floor-length gown with a bateau neckline. Her hair was pulled back and her expression of delight when she won the first award, Best Female Video, was the perfect accessory. Her expression, however, turned to disbelief when Kayne West interrupted her to basically say that Beyonce should have won.
Fast forward to the end of the night to when Beyonce received the biggest honor of the night – Video of the Year. Beyonce came to stage wearing a very short, very red, very form-fitting and very low-cut Roberto Cavalli dress. Her hair was down, and looked quite casual. Her very oversized circular silver earrings were prominent. She took the microphone and explained that she had her first VMA moment at the age of 17 and remembers it as one of the most exciting moments of her life. She then invited Taylor onto the stage to “have her moment.” I do not care what anyone thought of Beyonce and her dress; her actions made her the classiest woman at the VMAs last night!
Taylor reappeared, this time wearing a short, red dress that was slightly flared. She had her hair down and wore much more make-up than she did the first time around. In particular, she wore heavy red lipstick. She gave Beyonce a big hug and went ahead and made her acceptance speech.
In addition to the notable ladies in red, the red carpet saw some serious misses (Perez, really?) and some amazing hits (Christina Aguilera, loved the classic look!). I am looking forward to watching Kanye (who “apologized” on his blog!) on Jay Leno’s premiere episode of “The Jay Leno Show” tonight (NBC at 10 pm). Kayne was slated to be a guest before all the hub-bub. Now Jay can ask a question he’s asked before: What were you thinking?
