Philly Sure Is Fun

Philly named one of the most fun cities in America

Guess what Philly, you’re fun.

Philadelphia came in at No. 9 on Portfolio.com's "Fun Index," which uses a variety of categories to determine the most fun places in America.

Rankings looked at the country’s 100 largest metro areas and were based on seven factors: shopping, food and drink, culture, popular entertainment, gambling, high-impact sports, and low-impact sports.

New York City ranked at the top followed by Chicago, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland (Maine). Philly was ninthe with Minneapolis rounding out the Top 10.

The study didn’t specifically indicate why Philly possessed the seven factors, but here are our picks as to why we made it in the Top 10.

Shopping: Get out your credit cards because in Philly you don’t have to pay a sales tax on clothes. Plus, we boast a large selection of vintage clothing around Rittenhouse Square along Pine St., also known as Antique Row, and in Old City. South Street is also a hot spot for shoppers in search of something more eclectic.

Food and Drink: All that shopping making you hungry? Philly is famous for its Italian Market and the Reading Terminal Market. In Rittenhouse Square, Alma de Cuba, Davio’s, and Le Bec Fin are certainly crowd pleasers. We can’t leave out our famous cheese steaks. Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks are some of the best in all the land. And, Philly has dozens of BYOBs to tantalize the tastebuds.

Culture: Philly is full of museums and art galleries from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to The Franklin Institute to Please Touch Museum to The Eastern State Penitentiary there is something for everyone. Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Third St. Gallery, and Locks Gallery, are just a few of the places to see fine art. Old City, Manayunk, and Northern Liberties are full of galleries as well.

Popular entertainment: The Wachovia Center, Citizens Bank Park, The Philadelphia Zoo, The Electric Factory, and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts are just a handful of places to check out for some fun.

Gambling: Now that Philly has its license to gamble, people are anxiously awaiting the arrival of SugarHouse Casino along the Delaware River Waterfront. SugarHouse promises to be one of Philly’s most exciting attractions. Get your coins ready, the slot machines are calling. And, in the meantime Atlantic City is just an hour away.

High-impact sports: The Delaware River Waterfront is a very popular spot for those of us that like to wake board and jet ski. Go Vertical indoor rock gym is a great way to break a sweat.

Low-impact sports: Philly is fit. We have many Pilates and yoga centers as well as some beautiful greens for all the golf fanatics. Cobbs Creek Golf Club and Aronimink Golf Club are some of Philly’s most beautiful places to swing the clubs.
