After tests revealed that certain stainless steel pet bowls sold at Petco possibly contain Cobalt-60 the company issued a recall.
The pet company says it isn't sure how the radioactive material contaminated the product, but it suspects that one of its foreign suppliers used stainless steel that contained small quantities of Cobalt-60 when making the bowls.
The radiation levels are below state and federal regulatory limits and the testing by the Illinois state government on these bowls indicates that their is no health risk to pets or people.
“A person would have to hold one of the bowls against their chest for roughly six and a half days to receive a dose of radiation equivalent to a single chest X-ray,” according to a Petco press release. “These bowls do not pose an immediate health risk.”
Petco found no problems with any of their other stainless steel products from different suppliers.
Customers who purchased these specific bowls between the dates of May 31 and June 20 of this year can get a full refund at their local Petco store.
