The New Tavern

The New Tavern in Bala Cynwyd boasts an extensive yet affordable menu with a pleasant and attentive waitstaff, a fully stocked bar and a satisfactory wine list. Owners Nicolas and George Zarvalas (also the head chef) have brought fine dining and comfort together without inflated Mainline prices.

A Greek and Italian restaurant with menu items such as Athenian Greek salad (romaine lettuce, tomato wedges, cucumbers, red onions, feta cheese, Kalamata olives, and anchovies with balsamic vinaigrette, $7.95), grilled Norwegian salmon (grilled to perfection and served with fresh homemade dill sauce or homemade salsa, $17.95), and veal piccante (tender veal sauteed in fresh lemon, butter, wine sauce and a touch of garlic, served with capellini pasta, $17.95), there is absolutely something for everyone—from pasta lover to vegetarian to steak lover. And the prices are more than reasonable for the quality of food.

The New Tavern’s decor is tasteful; tables and booths are adorned with white linens and water glasses and both dining rooms and the bar area have fireplaces. (Not the fake decorative fireplace, but fireplaces that actually work and are lit for dinner guests.) There’s also a fairly large outdoor seating area, great for setting a romantic mood or just getting some fresh air.

Admittedly, the clientele at The New Tavern is a bit stuffy, but the atmosphere, the friendly staff, and the delicious food more than make up for it. Plus, I hear they’ve got a great happy hour from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with reduced drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
