Potito’s Closed for Good -- Not So Fast

Potito’s, a beloved South Philadelphia bakery known for its amazing cookies, delicious shortcakes, decorated sports cakes and other delectable sweets, will soon be open for business after a long hiatus that left customers wondering if the pastry shop would ever return.

There were rumblings that the bakery had closed for good after nearly 25 years in South Philly.

Earlier this month NBC Philadelphia tried to uncover what was going on with sweet-tooth haven. We went out to 1614 W Ritner Street only to find the doors chained up, the windows covered in paper and a small sign saying that the bakery was closed for renovations.

We reached out to owner Maria Potito but were unable to get any confirmation about what fans of the bakery could expect.

“Potito’s is closed for good,” said a South Philly baking rival.

Not so fast -- Potito’s will be back next month and it might be better than ever.

Potito wanted to clear the air about the future of her adored pastry shop.

“It can be told to all of my loyal customers and also to set story straight with my competitors that Potito's will reopen in September (with maybe even a few surprises),” Potito wrote in a statement to NBC Philadelphia.

So very soon pastry-craving foodies should once again by able to stop by Potito’s to fulfill their sweetness fix.
