Philly ‘Comfortably' on Top of Sweatpants List Again

For 2nd-straight year the City of Brotherly Love tops marketing firm's list of top sweats-buying cities

Soft pretzels, cheesesteaks, the Phillie Phanatic, Wawa, Ben Franklin, the Broad Street Bullies, Rocky and Tony Danza: What could be more Philadelphia then these icons?

Sweatpants!

That’s right the comfortable, drab-looking style of sweats is tops in Philadelphia, according to a recent study by Experian Simmons Marketing Services.

At Experian Simmons we ask our survey respondents if they bought any sweats in the last 12 months, as well as the number of individual items they purchased, and for the second year in a row, the nation’s top per capita consumer of sweats is Philadelphia, Pa.

Hartford, Pittsburgh, Lafayette, La. and Laredo, Texas, rounded out the Top 5 Most “Comfortable” Cities.

Philly’s second-consecutive year of comfy domination leads us to question: Is this distinction something Philadelphians should take pride in?

Why do we wear sweats? Do we just like comfort? Are we lazy? Does our weight tend to fluctuate? Have we yet to embrace the Snuggie? Does it mean we go to the gym more? Do we just like having new drawstring pants?

So many questions, so few answers in this study.

For now, it seems the best solution could be throwing on the sweats, grabbing a cup of cocoa and curling up on the couch to ponder it all.
