NJ Pup's Scuffle With Skunk Earns Her Award Nod

The Sicklerville dog was buried alive after fighting with a skunk. The resilient pooch was found alive hours later.

A Sicklerville, New Jersey dog was buried alive after a scuffle with a skunk. Amazingly enough, she survived, earning her a nomination for America's most unusual pet insurance claim.

Peanut, a dachshund-terrier mix, was buried beneath the deck of her home for hours, according to VPIHamboneAward.com.

Around 2:30 a.m., Peanut's owners, the Wolframs, called 911 after their pup got into a scuffle with a skunk and somehow ended up buried alive. Winslow Township Fire Department responded, but couldn't find peanut.

Refusing to give up, Christy Wolfram grabbed a shovel and kept digging. One firefighter helped, and soon that man saw a small paw in the dirt.

Peanut was alive and barely breathing. She was rushed to a local veterinarian. A week and a half later, Peanut was fully recovered!

Her amazing story has earned her a nomination for VPI's Hambone Award for most unsual pet insurance claim.

VPI says they review millions of pet insurance claims a year. Each month, they pick the most unusual, ending the year with 12 nominees for the Hambone.

The winner is decided by public vote.

You can vote for Peanut, or any of the other amazing animals through September 25.
