On Your Mark, Get Set, Row

One of the oldest adaptive rowing events is coming back to Philadelphia this year. The 28th Annual Bayada Regatta will take place Saturday, August 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Schuylkill River. The race brings together physically challenged rowers from around the world -- both amateur and competitive athletes.

Participants are set to compete in mixed and single events designed for beginners, young rowers and veterans.

“It isn’t really about the races,” said lifelong athlete John Curran. “It’s about the friendships we make and the support the racers find in one another. You won’t find any ‘poor me’ types around here.”

The Philadelphia Rowing Program for the Disabled hosts the race and also trains many of the athletes. Admission is free to the public and attendees can enjoy the race, entertainment, music and refreshments at St. Joseph’s Boathouse on Kelly Drive (about two miles North of Boathouse Row) .
