Digging for Fun

Help out your local park by getting down and dirty. Oh, and educated, too.

Ever feel like getting really dirty? The Valley Forge National Historical Park is giving you the chance with the Get Dirty After Dark fundraiser on Thursday, June 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Participants will get to rummage through freshly dug dirt to truly experience “hands-on history." Archaeologists and costumed interpreters will guide groups to sift through Valley Forge dirt for artifacts.

But getting dirty isn’t all there is to do. Participants will view previously excavated items that consist of cufflinks, musketballs, gunflints and more. The recovery and restoration process for such items will be explained in extensive detail.

And we're sure that all that digging will work up a pretty hefty appetite, thankfully, the good people of Valley Forge will provide all the newly minted archaeologists with Southern-style barbecue.

Cost per person is $25 for members, $35 for non-members, $20 for young friends, $5 for children under 18 and kids below five get in free. All proceeds will go to the Valley Forge National Historical Park. Space is limited so be sure to register by June 21by calling 610-783-1777.
