If you like original fine art and handmade crafts, and still need to do some holiday shopping, then you might want to check out the Holiday Art Market at the Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG).
On Dec. 10-11 and Dec. 17-18 from 10am to 5pm the Holiday Art Market will open its doors to the community and offer a diverse selection of fine arts and handcrafts created by local artists from Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill.
Over 30 local Northwest artists have created original and unique gifts that will be for sale. Shoppers can expect to find a variety of one-of-a-kind gifts such as handmade leather goods, pottery, jewelry, stained glass art, photography, and much more. Local musicians will play live music as customers shop, which will be a change to the typical department store radio holiday shoppers are accustomed to.
The MAAG, which recently moved into its new 5,000 square foot home at 11 West Mt. Airy Avenue, is a nonprofit organization that provides opportunity and inspiration for local artists and art lovers in Northwest Philadelphia.
“We see ourselves as a gateway to area artists and art lovers,” said president and co-founder Linda Slodki. “With the art market you are supporting local artists. You’re dealing directly with the artist.”
According to Slodki, the Holiday Art Market is more than just a place to buy gifts; it’s a celebration of community and its members, two very important aspects of the Mt. Airy Art Garage.
“People see us as part of their community. We truly believe that we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the Northwest community,” Slodki said.
In addition to the holiday market, MAAG has much more in store for its members and community. Plans for a permanent art gallery, seven artist studios, community workshops, workshop rooms, and performance space are all in the works.
Slodki said she is excited about the art market and the future of MAAG. “We want to create an incubator for the arts. It’s like a dream machine.”
