A Real Guitar Hero

A lucky fan gets pulled on stage to perform with Green Day at the Spectrum

Ever fantasize about being a rock star? Well local guy Derek Hensinger got his chance on Tuesday night and sure didn't waste it!

He joined 15,000 other Green Day fans at the Spectrum to see the rock band play and ended up being chosen to come up on stage to perform in front of the sell-out crowd.

Hensinger, a journalism major at Penn State University, knew from previous tour stops that front man Billie Joe Armstrong was singling out novice guitar players from the audience.

“I got here at 2 o’clock. I waited for hours to get a good spot on the floor,” he told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

During the second encore, Armstrong started looking for a six-string player and Hensinger’s friends went wild, pointing him out. The Green Day front man pulled him on stage, gave him the ax to play and even handed him the mic to belt out a few lines of “Jesus of Suburbia.”

One of the fans who saw him perform said he was actually “very good.”

Hensinger is a guitarist from Macungie, Pa. where he plays in his own rock band, Bang Diesel.  His cameo with Green Day has been posted You Tube and in the description of the video, he wanted to make a few things clear.

“This wasn’t scripted, it was all spur-the-moment. I am actually playing the guitar here. My mind is still blown.”
