“The Thinker” Finally Takes Action

“The Thinker” Moves Brainstorming Session to Art Museum

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is taking in a next-door neighbor while his place gets a much-needed renovation: “The Thinker.”

One of Auguste Rodin’s most famous sculptures, “The Thinker,” will spend his summer vacation in Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Great Stair Hall while repairs to the exterior landscape of the Rodin Museum begin, the Art Museum announced Monday.

Before he can settle into the Great Stair Hall, he’s getting a bit of a spa treatment, though. The Conservation Department at the museum will reapply a protective coating to the pondering sculpture.

The renovation of the Rodin Museum and landscape is part of a larger project to implement improvements to the Ben Franklin Parkway, says the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Restoration of the structure that was modeled after Rodin’s own 18th-Century façade on his property in Meaudon, France, includes repairing walls, stairs and copings, landscaping, and garden improvements.

The renovations should be complete by fall 2010.

“The Thinker” will be back at the Rodin Museum this fall.
