Sneak Peek at the New “Harry Potter”

Is Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince the best film adaptation in J.K. Rowlings book series so far? It’s pretty darn close. For a series that started back in 2001, it’s hard to believe the magical wizard is still going strong six films later!

The latest journey finds the chosen one dealing with many dark secrets and ominous foreshadowing. The film opens with an attack by the Death Eaters, messengers of the dark lord, and their presence becomes known as the film progresses. Meanwhile, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) returns with friends Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) for his sixth year at Hogwarts to find the usual corruption and conspiracy.

His Nemesis Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) inches closer to the dark side and may be involved in the dark lord’s plan as is Professor Snape, now sworn to protect Malfoy no matter the cost. Knowing that something dark is on the horizon, Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) gives Harry a peek into the childhood memories of Voldemort, then known as Tom Riddle, hoping to prepare him for what’s coming.

Meanwhile, all of them are dealing with perhaps the most heartbreaking issue of all: puberty.  Hermione becomes jealous over Ron’s flirtations with a persistent admirer, while Harry displays awkwardness with an attraction to Ron’s sister Ginny (Bonnie Wright). It’s very clear that the road to adulthood is going to be paved with more than a few bumps.

Probably the best quality about this movie is the human component that remains at the center. The special effects are amazing (the best yet!), and the plot, as always, is fascinating and told in a solid, fluid manner. But Director Yates never loses sight of his character’s heartbreak and struggle.

This is also the first Harry Potter movie in a few years that bears a PG rating, but the film still remains unquestionably dark at times, though I did notice perhaps some more prominent humor in this entry. It’s another testament to the talented filmmakers that everything weaves together in such a seamless manner. Eager fans may have been waiting for Half Potter and The Half Blood Prince since last December, but rest assured, the wait has surely been worth it.
