Remember Spellbound?
The 2002 movie documented the lives of eight teens on a quest to win the 1999 National Spelling Bee. To the producers’ surprise, the movie was a megahit, and spelling bees saw a surge in popularity they hadn’t since, well, the advent of TV.
It’s been a few years since the documentary made waves, but spelling bees are still just as intense. And if you were a fan of the movie, we’re pretty sure you’ll enjoy the live-action version: The Philadelphia Tribune/Scripps Howard Spelling bee, which is a qualifier for the National Spelling Bee, will take place Saturday, March 14 at the Free Library. And it’s free to watch!
The competition kicks off at 10 a.m., and after the 5th grade spelldown (we’re not sure what that is, but it sounds extreme), the five best contestants compete in the Regional Spelling Bee at noon. You can be there to witness the whole thing.
