Ultra-Dance Party at The Kimmel

Want to escape to somewhere exotic? Look no further than the Kimmel Center. They’ve transformed the Perelman Theater into an exotic dance club that features live music from around the globe.

Global Grooves kicks off this Thursday, July 9 and will continue (every Thursday except July 23) until August 6.

Tonight, one of East Africa’s most popular vocalists, Samba Mapangala and his band Virunga perform Congolese rumba and soukous with an earthy, Kenyan style.

"Pure balm, he makes you wonder again why African music still awaits its Marley moment of global breakthrough," says The Independent.

Mapangala sings in both Congolese Lingala and Kenyan Swahili languages and his performances feature ultra-danceable songs with vocal harmonies, complex guitar lines, rapid-fire bass and fast-paced percussion, all with brilliant guitar and horn solos.

So whether it’s African rumba, Latin fusion, Bollywood sounds or Balkan brass bash that gets your body movin’, you’ve got to check out Global Grooves.

The party starts at 7:30 p.m. and for the small price of $20, you get a live concert and a dance party.

Oh, and if you need a little something to get loose, there’s a cash bar.
