Drinking to the Memories

Thanksgiving Eve has become the biggest drinking night of the year

In any town, on any main street it's no secret that Thanksgiving Eve is the biggest drinking night of the year.

Bar owners will tell you that somehow the night has quietly leapfrogged St. Patrick's Day and even New Year's Eve as their best sales night of the year.

Trace Connor, bartender at The Great American Pub in Conshohocken, says even the economy can't slow down a good time.

“I don't think that will affect it. Everyone can still afford to drink a beer or two,” Connor said Wednesday.

It seems friends are toasting to reconnecting. Thanksgiving Eve has turned into a chance for friends to catch up on old times.

It has become a tradition for Mike McTamney from Norristown and his friends.

“When we were in college, we’d come out this night every year, get together and see people we haven’t seen in a while,” said McTamney.

“You have a lot of people coming in to town…old people from high school and college. Family members and what not comin’ all around. We get together, go out and have a few drinks,” agreed Larry Schmitt of Northeast Philly.

For many, this is usually the weekend for high school reunions and some get a jump on the party.  Before they trade it all in for turkey and time with the family.

“My high school reunion is actually Friday, but there’s a ton of reunions tonight and all weekend. But tonight's our night,” said Lisa Murray.
