Celebrate Earth Day With Earthy Events

Go green this week as some organizations celebrate Earth Day on April 22 in some traditional and not-so traditional ways.

Normally people celebrate Earth Day by planting trees and replacing light bulbs -- but this year there are more activities and offers for those who love the environment.

Hear Jeffrey Sachs speak at the National Constitution Center. The Columbia University Earth Institute economic adviser will be speaking about environmental conditions on Earth Day at 6 p.m. Admission is $15.

Boltbus.com is practically giving away bus tickets between New York, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. Tickets can be purchased on Boltbus.com -- one-way fares start at $1. The bus company sees the importance of getting cars off the road and more people on buses for more environmentally friendly transportation.

The ING Café on 16th and Walnut is out to prove that saving the planet and money are one in the same.

From 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. it's lights out for the Café . They want to teach people that saving electricity not only saves some green, but energy, too.

As an added bonus, if you buy something at the Café , you'll get a free resuable shopping bag.

ING Café continues to stay green throughout the week with 50% off their line of eco-friendly products tomorrow and free coffee on Friday with the purchase of a travel mug at 50% off.

You're going love the 10 new recycling trucks designed by the Philly Mural Arts Program. At 2 p.m. Mayor Nutter, designer Desiree Bender and students from MAP will debut the trucks at Love Park on Earth Day.

The celebration of Earth continues this weekend.

The Philadelphia Zoo is holding off their Earth Day Party for the Planet. The event takes place on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Zoo party will feature music, games and information about local environmental organizations. Guests are encouraged to bring old sneakers, cell phones, plastic bottles and newspapers to recycle. The party is free with admission to the Philadelphia Zoo.
