Is your school environmentally conscious?

Two local schools (one high school and one middle school) will be awarded the 2010 Environmental Community Service Award presented by Wawa, NBC Philadelphia and the environmental law firm Manko, Gold, Katcher & Fox, LLP.

These companies want to be green with envy of the school clubs, classrooms or teams who establish the most worthwhile environmental community service school project that establishes a “connection to your community.”

The best part is that each winning school will get their hands on some green. A $5,000 honorarium will be given to further the school’s environmental programs.

Past winning projects included linking hydroponics, aquaculture and alternative energy, an art garden and park clean ups.

The requirements for the fifth annual ECSA are pretty simple and will soon be posted online. There are some basic requirements schools must meet to enter:

  • Complete and submit the application by Friday, February 26, 2010.
  • Be located in the following Delaware Valley counties: Pennsylvania -- Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lehigh, Montgomery and Philadelphia; New Jersey -- Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Mercer, Ocean and Salem; Delaware -- Kent and New Castle.
  • The application must be submitted by official school email address or by a school official.

Judges from the Franklin, Academy of Natural Sciences Fairmount Water Works, state environmental protection agencies and reps from Wawa, NBC Philadelphia, MGKF will pick the winners.

The winners will be announced on April 22, 2020, just days before the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

“Each year we are impressed with the incredibly creative and resourceful programs developed and implemented by the students. It’s difficult being a judge because we have seen over 100 worthwhile efforts by students and faculty over these past four years. Selecting the winners is never easy,” said MGKF partner Robb Fox.
