Carlos Ruiz of the Philadelphia Phillies celebrates after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays during the continuation of game five of the 2008 MLB World Series.

From losingest team to longest game, the Philadelphia Phillies are World Series champions.

Let's say it again...we're World Series Champions, Philly!

Brad Lidge and the Phillies finished off the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in a three-inning sprint Wednesday night to win a suspended Game 5 nearly 50 hours after it started.

Left in limbo by a two-day rainstorm, the Phillies seesawed to their first championship since 1980. Pedro Feliz singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh and Lidge closed out his perfect season to deliver the title Philly craved for so long.

Although he did not get the win for Game 5, Phillies star pitcher Cole Hamels had an extra reason to celebrate as he was named series MVP.

Bundled in parkas and blankets, fans returned in force to Citizens Bank Park and saw the city claim its first major sports championship in 25 years. No more references needed to the Phillies and their 10,000-plus losses.

It was among the most bizarre endings in baseball history, a best-of-seven series turned into a best-of-three and a half showdown when play resumed in the bottom of the sixth inning tied at 2.

Two Rays relievers warmed up to start, and there was a pinch-hitter before a single pitch. "God Bless America" was sung rather than the national anthem and the seventh-inning stretch came quickly.

Despite the delay, fans will always remember how this one wrapped up. And for the first time in a long while, kids saw a World Series champion crowned before bedtime.

The Phillies and City of Philadelphia have also announced details for the championship parade.  The parade will take place on Friday beginning at noon.  The floats will roll from 20th and Market Streets and travel south down Broad Street ending at Citizens Bank Park.

The city is encouraging the public to take public transportation due to the large crowds and limited parking.

  • Sylvester W.Damiani Monday, Nov 3 at 6:22 PM FLAG COMMENT I'm a die hard Philliesfan , I was at the 1980 world series and the 1983 series. It's great that the Phillies won the World Series but the curse was broken by the Philadelphia Soul indoor football team this past summer. Let's give them some credit too

  • DE-PHAN Thursday, Oct 30 at 11:04 PM FLAG COMMENT Ok so the curse for the top 4 in Philly may have been broken but We've seen the Soul win a championship, and the Phantoms win TWO Calder Cups, they are considered professional (almost a minor-major type deal I say). Either way we won!
  • RoseAnn Thursday, Oct 30 at 9:16 PM FLAG COMMENT As a Mets fan, I must congratulate the Phillies on their win of the World Series. As a Philly suburbanite I have to disagree with every news program saying that the Phillies broke the curse. The first winning professional team (not a minor league) to win a title was the Philadelphia Soul. But hey what is a win between professional teams.
