One Year of Firsts: Give a Prayer, Take a Prayer

Prayer may not change things for you, but it for sure changes you for things. ~Samuel M. Shoemaker

My daughter loves to hike up Runyon Canyon in the hills of LA. Today she convinced us to go up to the top with her to see a prayer box created by designer Jeannie Mai.

The idea is you put a prayer or a thought into the box, then you take a prayer out of the box. We all decided as a First today, to write "prayers" to exchange in the box.  This was mine.

It felt like we were on a little spiritual quest as we hiked.  It takes about 40 minutes to get up the sometimes ragged, twisting trails of the canyon.

Alexa and I talked along the way about our expectations for this prayer exchange. You hear my husband Phil, chime in.

So here's the thing.  When we finally got to the top, we found the prayer box was gone.  There we were, prayers in hand. We decided there was no way our hike was ending without a prayer exchange.  The three of us shared.

My prayer was to try to make sure everything I did today was going in a new and positive direction.  I loved Alexa's and Phil's prayers, but they belong to them and us.

Funny about the goal of reaching the prayer box. There is definitely a life analogy here. I think it's that sometimes you work hard to reach a goal, expecting when you get there it will be a certain way, a certain experience.  But often it's not what you expect at all.

Still, you know there's a reason you came all that way.  Perhaps it was just important that you made the journey.

It wasn't the experience I expected when I wrote out my "prayer" this morning. In a way, it was much better.
