Cops Bust Accused Wawa Gas Thief

Police say man syphoned 513 gallons of diesel fuel from an underground tank

Philadelphia Police announced today that they arrested the man who they say used a tank inside a bread truck to swipe about $2,000 worth of gas from a Wawa.

Police say that Keith Jones, 55, of the 5500 block of Belmar Terrace made off with 513 gallons of diesel fuel from the Wawa gas station at 8220 Bartram Ave in the Eastwick section of Southwest Philly on Feb. 4.

Investigators say that around 3 a.m. Jones parked a Stroehmann Bread box truck over a cap above the underground tanks.

“We believe that there was a pump on that truck that was able to pull the diesel fuel from the underground tank onto the truck,” said police Lt. John Walker.

After about 40 minutes the truck drove off visibly weighed down in the rear, police said. Around 11:30 a.m. that same day Wawa employees realized that someone had tampered with the tank.

Police say they arrest Jones at his residence on the 5500 block of Belmar Terrace. Jones was out of custody on his own recognizance after being charged Tuesday with unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief and possession of an instrument of crime, according to court records.

Police didn't say how they zeroed in on Jones.
