Accused Armed Thief Gives Victim $5 Back During Robbery Outside Wawa

An accused robber who held up a man outside a Pennsylvania Wawa store gave a refund before making his escape.

The victim of the convenience store heist at the Palmer Township Wawa story said the semi-penitent thief gave him back $5 before running away.

Ethan Voice tells The (Easton) Express-Times that the suspect, 38-year-old Timothy T. Smith, of Arlington, Virginia, handed him the $5 bill after demanding Voice's wallet after he finished pumping gas at the Wawa on S 25th Street.

"I generally would help someone out with a few bucks if they need it," Voice told the paper. "I thought it could be another situation like that."

Township police say the robbery happened Friday night. Police said Smith showed Voice what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun.

"I couldn't tell if it was plastic or real," Voice told the paper. "Given the situation, I know what they say, 'Don't try to be a hero -- just give him what he wants.'"

They arrested Smith on Saturday, but not before police say he used Voice's credit cards to charge items worth $322 at two other stores.

Police found Smith by tracking the credit card purchases and using surveillance video from the stores where they were used.

Smith remained in the Northampton County Jail on Tuesday. He faces a preliminary hearing Sept. 17 on charges including robbery, theft, and credit card fraud.
