Man Dies in 3rd Crash After 2 Hit-&-Runs

Police say a Pennsylvania man died in a crash that occurred shortly after he left the scene of two previous crashes.

The (Easton) Express-Times reports 45-year-old Matthew Pope of South Whitehall Township, was pronounced dead at St. Luke's University Hospital about three hours after the last crash. That happened about 9:20 a.m. Thursday in Lower Nazareth Township.

But before that crash proved fatal, Colonial Regional police say Pope had crashed his Saturn in Hanover Township, Northampton County, and left that scene and crashed into two vehicles on Route 191 elsewhere in Lower Nazareth.

Police say Pope continued on to Route 248, where he rear-ended a sport-utility vehicle and later died.

Police had earlier chased Pope, but were not in pursuit during the fatal crash. They were continuing to piece together the sequence of events.
