On a cloudy Wednesday morning, the Swell bubble gum factory, a Havertown, Pa. landmark for decades, began to come tumbling down.
Workers started demolishing the 200,000-square-foot Eagle Road factory to make room for new develpoment.
Bubble gum and confections were produced at the site from 1948 until it closed in 2003.
Since then the plant has been an eyesore for local residents as legal battles over the actual value of the property kept the site from being developed, according to the Delco Times.
With the demise of the bubble gum plant comes a state-of-the-art YMCA. The 70,000-square-foot facility promises to serve 20,000 local residents and create 150 jobs, reported the Delco Times.
On Wednesday, though, as bulldozers ended the bubble gum plant's run, residents were left remembering what was before the bubble popped on Swell.
