Suspect in Armed Theft of Pennsylvania State Police Cruiser Surrenders

A northwestern Pennsylvania man has been jailed on charges he stole the cruiser of a state trooper who was trying to arrest him for a domestic dispute a day earlier.

Anthony Kuroda, 28, of Harborcreek Township, was charged with threatening his wife Monday, and possessing prohibited weapons including a set of metal knuckles, and left the residence before police could arrive. Police also found three 9 mm Glock handguns.

When Kuroda returned Tuesday about 8 a.m., someone called 911 and police responded, setting off a chain of events that led to a 2½-hour manhunt and caused three nearby schools to lock down as a precaution, the Erie Times-News reported.

A responding trooper saw Kuroda walking with a black bag with the word "Glock" on it, and tried to stop him, police said.

But Kuroda scuffled with the trooper and somehow weathered stun gun shocks and jumped into the cruiser as the trooper fired two shots at the vehicle. Police don't believe Kuroda was hit by the gunfire, but suffered a related wound, possibly from windshield glass shattered by one of the shots, police said.

Kuroda drove away and eluded police after he abandoned the cruiser in Millcreek Township, prompting them to summon a helicopter and search the area, aided by SWAT teams.

The search was ongoing when Kuroda persuaded a friend to give him a ride to the nearby Erie police station, where he surrendered about 10:30 a.m.

Online court records don't list an attorney for Kuroda, who faces a preliminary hearing Jan. 28.

He's charged with terroristic threats, harassment and possessing a prohibited weapon in Monday's domestic dispute, and robbery of a motor vehicle — or carjacking — aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disarming a police officer in Tuesday's incidents.

The trooper involved in the shooting is not being identified, but will be on paid administrative duty while investigators review the shooting, a state police spokesman said.
