What Ever Happened to the Sixers Mascot Search?

76ers hold home opener with mascot decision still up in the air

Remember Phil E. Moose, B. Franklin Dogg and Big Ben?

If you forget already, you aren’t alone but here’s a refresher: those were the three controversial choices -- met by plenty of headscratching -- put up for fan vote by the Sixers’ new ownership group.

One month later the Sixers still don’t have a replacement for the mercifully retired Hip Hop and with the home opener less than 24 hours away they won’t have one on the Wells Fargo Center court come Friday night.

“At this time, we do not have any announcements planned, nor made any final decisions, regarding the Sixers mascot,” Sixers Public Relations Director Michael Preston told NBC10 Thursday night.

No mascot?

Is it possible the Sixers might go an entire season without a goofy guy in a costume trying to rile fans up?

Possibly.

Instead of a guy in a costume, the 3-2 76ers will open their 2012 home slate with a supporting cast of dancers, dunkers and an American Idol finalist. The Sixers Dream Team (still an interesting name choice) dancers and the dunking Flight Squad will perform on the court and Idol finalist Alya Brown will perform the “Star Spangled Banner” and sing at halftime.

And it's $1 Hot Dog Night to boot as the Sixers take on the Pistons.

As for Phil, B and Ben? It looks like the Sixers could possibly be going back to the drawing board before finding the next mascot for Philly. Stay tuned.
