What's a Harbor Seal Doing in South Jersey Creek?

The weather could be to blame for why a harbor seal has been seen swimming in the freshwater Rancocas Creek in South Jersey.

The seal has been spotted near Willingboro in Burlington County.

Bob Schoelkopf of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center tells the Philadelphia Inquirer it's not unusual for seals to follow herring in the spring and not realize how far upstream they have gone.

Schoelkopf speculates the lack of rain may have increased the salinity in the creek and the seal may return to Delaware Bay after a heavy rain.

The center is keeping an eye on the seal.
