Driver Says Brake Failure Caused Philadelphia Streets Department Truck to Split Utility Pole in 3

A Philadelphia Street Department worker claimed his brakes failed causing his dump truck to splinter a utility pole into three pieces Saturday morning.

The crash along Umbria Street at Parker Avenue – that’s right next to the parking lot for SEPTA’s Ivy Ridge Regional Rail Station – knocked down power lines around 9:25 a.m. then came to rest near a tree across the street. PECO didn’t reveal how many, if any, customers lost power.

The wreck left the city worker behind the wheel of the dump truck with some cuts and bruises, said Philadelphia Police. He told investigators that his brakes gave way before he slammed into the pole.

The force of the wreck left the front of the truck badly damaged and caused a wheel to bend at a 45-degree angle.

The crash caused traffic troubles in the area as crews worked to clear the scene.
