New Jersey Jewelry Store Thief Escapes into Sewer: Police

Police are looking for a 24-year-old man they say held up a jewelry store in northern New Jersey and escaped into the sewer.

Authorities say the man briefly posed as a customer at an Englewood store before he pulled out a heavy tool and started smashing display cases Saturday. He grabbed two trays of rings and tried to flee.

But the owner electronically locked the shop, causing the man to smash the glass door to get out.

Officers spotted him jumping over parked cars and fences. He eventually dropped into an underground spillway. Officers tried to seal off the sewer tunnel's exits, but he escaped.

Police searched the tunnel again Monday, but didn't find him. They say he dropped most of the stolen jewelry during his escape.
