Gold Coin Dropped in Salvation Army Kettle in Florida

For the tenth year in a row, an anonymous donor has placed a 1924 Liberty Eagle $20 gold coin into a Salvation Army's red kettle in southwest Florida.

The News-Press reports that while the giver always offers a Liberty Eagle gold coin, the coins are minted from different years and bring in at least a thousand dollars for the charity.

A note always accompanies the coin: "In loving memory of Mimi." Leaders at The Salvation Army don't know who Mimi is or who is giving the gold coins in her memory. It often inspires copycats. This season's giving campaign in Fort Myers aims to raise $650,000 to help needy local families.

The coin was dropped into a kettle at a Publix supermarket.
