Delaware Bar Patron Uses Broom Handle in Attempted Robbery: Police

A customer at a Delaware bar returned from the bathroom Friday night with a broom handle and then attacked an employee while demanding money from the register.

The suspect emerged from the men's restroom in the Chestnut Hill Sports Bar on Prestbury Square in Newark just after 8 p.m., approached the 64-year-old worker and struck her with the broom handle, police said.

The robber implied he had a gun while demanding the woman hand over cash, investigators said.

As the pair struggled, another customer entered the bar, which caused the suspect to try and run from the scene, officials said.

The patron tried to prevent the suspect from escaping and the confrontation became physical, before the alleged robber was able to flee.

The worker was not hurt in the incident, however the intervening customer suffered a minor injury, police said.

Authorities described the suspect as approximately 30- to 35-years-old, about 5-feet 5-inches to 5-feet 9-inches tall and balding. He was wearing blue jeans and a green t-shirt during the attempted robbery, investigators said.

Anyone with information about the crime or the robber's identity is urged to contact police at 302-834-2630.
