Black Bear's Dinnertime Scare

Resident captures bear roaming through neighborhood on camera

A furry, unwelcomed visitor sent residents of one community running for their homes Monday.

A large black bear was caught roaming across the well-tended yards of the Green Hills development in Orefield, Pa. just before dinnertime.

Resident Mike Gibson started following the bear, which was tagged on both ears, after his wife spotted the animal near their home.

"I followed the bear for quite some time giving the neighbors a heads up as there were many children and pets out during the evening at around 6 p.m.," he said.

Gibson says the bear made its way through the neighborhood, into a park and then over a footbridge before running into another subdivision. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

"People are very concerned," Gibson said. He was able to capture the bear fleeing across the road with his camcorder.

Lehigh County dispatchers told NBC Philadelphia they've gotten several calls about the bear throughout the day.

"That thing has been running around up there all day," one dispatcher said over the phone.

Police have been trying to get ahead of the bear to capture it, but have been unable. They are warning residents to stay far away and call 911 if they see it again.
