Officer Spots Suspected Bank Robber Taking Coffee Break 1 Block Away

Police arrested a man suspected of robbing a bank in North Jersey after they say he stopped for a cup of coffee a block away.

Police were already looking for Michael Cassano in conjunction with another  bank robbery in Toms River on Feb. 5. While en route to arrest Casson, police were informed that he was already in custody of the Lodi Police Department.

Police said a man wearing a fedora hat approached a teller at the Hudson City Savings Bank in Lodi on Monday, placed a BB-gun on the counter and demanded money. The man fled with $4,000.

Maywood Police Chief David Pegg told The Record newspaper an officer spotted a man matching the description of the suspect near the entrance of a Dunkin' Donuts drinking coffee.

Pegg said after talking to 38-year-old Michael Cassano, officers discovered the gun and the cash.

The Oakland Gardens, New York, resident is charged with robbery and two weapons offenses.
