Firefighters needed an assist from animal control officers after discovering a “zoo” of animals living in a cluttered home that was on fire Wednesday.
When firefighters responded to a blaze on the 1000 block of Glenwood Street they found not just a fire but discovered live chickens, exotic birds, rabbits and four dogs on the property, according to officials.
The Fire Department called in SPCA Humane Law Enforcement officers to remove the 56 animals from the burned out house, SPCA officials said.
None of the animals died in the blaze but some were in need of medical care possibly due to the unsanitary conditions of the house, the SPCA said.
The animals were taken to the Pennsylvania SPCA headquarters where they received medical evaluation and care.
A space heater in the messy home is believed to have caused the fire, said the SPCA.
Animal officers are investigating and cruelty charges are already in the works, they say.
