Local Company Made Moonwalk Possible

Forty-years ago, two Americans landed on the moon. New Jersey native, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong of Ohio were the first humans to set foot on the moon. But they wouldn’t have been able to get out of the shuttle if it wasn’t for International Latex Corporation (ILC) based in Delaware.

ILC had to compete with some top companies to get the prestigious lunar suit contract. Many thought it would be a long shot -- some  claimed the company didn't have enough aerospace experience for such a mission.

But ILC proved everyone wrong and came out on top, being asked to manufacture the suits.

And not only did they make the suits, they improved them. The suits of the past were more like "armor," which exhausted an astronaut just by wearing the garb. So, ILC developed suits of latex rubber that were more flexible and breathable.

"We are again putting our engineers and technicians to the test to develop the next generation suit for the Constellation program that will return mankind to the moon," said the company.
