President Barack Obama issued a statement Monday urging the Federal Communications Commission to adopt strong net neutrality rules. To implement new regulations, Obama said, the FCC should reclassify broadband service as a public utility — a route the Comcasts, Verizons and AT&Ts of the world are extremely against.
For instance, in May, Comcast and a group of broadband companies teamed up in sending a letter to the FCC saying the future of open Internet should have nothing to do with Title II of the Communications Act. (The FCC would have to reclassify consumer broadband service under Title II.)
Comcast's Executive Vice President David L. Cohen, unsurprisingly, issued a response to the president's announcement.
