Joel Embiid on Team Africa Roster for Exhibition Game in Johannesburg

Joel Embiid hasn't played in a basketball game since Jan. 27, but the Sixers big man is on the Team Africa roster for NBA Africa Game 2017.

Embiid, a Cameroon native, is one of 12 players on Team Africa for the exhibition game against Team World. The game will take place on Aug. 5 at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This is the NBA's second game in Africa. The first was in 2015. According to a release from the NBA, the game is "in support of" UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and SOS Children's Villages South Africa.

"Basketball is witnessing explosive growth in Africa," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "Our return to Johannesburg this summer is part of the League's continued commitment to bring the authentic NBA experience to fans around the world. I would like to thank the NBPA for their participation and for being terrific partners on this game and surrounding events."

Team Africa includes players born in Africa and second-generation African players. Embiid was born in Yaounde, Cameroon, but came to the United States at 16 to play basketball. Other players on Team Africa include Luol Deng, Thabo Sefolosha and Embiid's fellow Cameroonian, Luc Mbah a Moute.

Embiid, 23, missed the final 37 games of the 2016-17 season with a knee injury. His first NBA season came after he missed the first two years of his career with a foot injury.
