RENTON, Wash. -- A person with knowledge of the deal says safety Kam Chancellor and the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a three-year contract extension worth up to $36 million with $25 million guaranteed.
The Seahawks have locked up one of their core players through the 2020 season and taken away the chances Chancellor leaves in free agency after this season. The person confirmed the deal Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because it had not been announced by the team. ESPN first reported the deal.
Chancellor, 29, has been Seattle's starting strong safety since 2011 and one of the key locker room leaders. He spoke Monday about his optimism that a deal would get done before the start of the season but he was willing to play out the final year of his deal.
Giants: K Mike Nugent signed
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants have signed veteran Mike Nugent to challenge rookie Aldrick Rosas for their placekicking job.
The 35-year-old Nugent played the past seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He made 23 of 29 on both his field goal and extra point attempts before being released on Dec. 13.
Rosas has never played in a regular-season game. His only NFL field goal attempt came in a preseason game with Tennessee last summer.
Josh Brown and Robbie Gould kicked for the Giants last season, with Gould taking over after Brown was released because of domestic violence problems.

Gould signed with the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent in the offseason.
Nugent also has played for the Jets, Tampa Bay and Arizona. He has made 236 of 292 field goal attempts and 344 of 355 extra points, scoring more than 100 points in a season six times.
Panthers: Cam Newton held out of practice with shoulder soreness
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was held out of passing drills with soreness in surgically repaired right throwing shoulder.
Coach Ron Rivera said Newton told the training staff prior to Tuesday's practice that he was still sore from last week's workouts. Newton was suited up, but only worked on handoffs.
Rivera said, "We figured why push it? Why have him throw with a sore arm -- and make it even sorer?"
Newton missed the final portion of practice Sunday with some soreness in the shoulder. The Panthers had Monday off, so he'd been expected to return to work.
Rivera hasn't decided whether Newton will play in the Aug. 9 preseason opener against the Houston Texans.
Newton had surgery in March to repair a partially torn rotator cuff.
