NFL Notes: Cardinals Rule Carson Palmer Out Vs. 49ers

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals won't have Carson Palmer when they face the San Francisco 49ers Thursday night.

Coach Bruce Arians said Wednesday the quarterback remains in the concussion protocol and has not been cleared to play. Arians said Palmer would not make the trip.

Backup Drew Stanton will make the 13th career start of his 10-year NFL career. He went 5-3 as a starter when Palmer went down with a season-ending knee injury in 2014.

Arians said he is "very optimistic" Palmer will be back for the Cardinals' next game, a Monday night contest against the New York Jets on Oct. 17.

Washington: Team signs 3-time Pro Bowler Whitner
ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins have signed three-time Pro Bowl safety Donte Whitner and placed David Bruton on injured reserve.

Whitner has played 10 NFL seasons, most recently with the Cleveland Browns. The 31-year-old was released in April and said he turned down a contract offer from the Los Angeles Rams because he wanted a one-year deal.

Coach Jay Gruden says the team had to make roster decisions with a banged-up defense and opted to put Bruton on IR with the strong safety in the league's concussion protocol.

The Redskins also released defensive lineman Kendall Reyes and signed former Jacksonville Jaguars safety Josh Evans. Gruden says he's confident in the team's in-house defensive linemen and wanted to fill holes in the secondary.

Bears: Kevin White placed on injured reserve
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White will be placed on injured reserve with a fractured left fibula, one year after missing his entire rookie season with a stress fracture in the same leg.

White was injured Sunday in a 17-14 victory over the Detroit Lions. In addition to the broken bone, White suffered a high ankle sprain as he was tackled during the third quarter.

White leads the Bears this season in receptions with 19, and has 187 receiving yards. The seventh overall draft pick in 2015, he went on IR during the preseason last year because of left shin injury.

Broncos: Talib could face discipline over shooting
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Aqib Talib could still be disciplined by the NFL even if the Denver Broncos star cornerback faces no criminal charges in the shooting last summer in Texas which a bullet pierced his right leg.

Dallas police have not confirmed a report by WFAA-TV in Dallas that their investigation is closed and no charges are forthcoming against Talib after detectives determined he shot himself on June 5.

Even if he faces no legal consequences, Talib could still be suspended or fined by the NFL, which doesn't require criminal charges or a conviction to mete out player punishment.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Talib's case "is under review of the personal conduct policy."

Talib, who has had firearm incidents in the past, told police the night he was shot that he was too intoxicated to recall details of the shooting. He required stitches but no surgery and missed the Broncos' visit to the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl title (see full story).
