NFL Notes: Adrian Peterson to Undergo Knee Surgery

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Adrian Peterson will have surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus, putting his season and perhaps his 10-year run with Minnesota in question.

But the Vikings have held off for now on placing the franchise's all-time leading rusher on injured reserve.

Peterson was hurt in Sunday night's victory over Green Bay, needing assistance off the field after his knee twisted while being tackled at the end of a run. He has only 50 yards on 31 attempts this season.

Peterson told ESPN on Wednesday morning that the type of tear he was diagnosed with typically requires a minimum recovery time of three to four months. But Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said the timetable for Peterson's return won't be clear until after the procedure.

"Everything is possible," Zimmer said. "It could be season ending. It could be three weeks, four weeks. I don't know." (see full story)

Gordon did not address several subpoenas and a Cuyahoga County judge issued the warrant last month, the county's prosecutor's office confirmed Wednesday. A woman alleges Gordon is the father of her 1-year-old daughter.

Gordon is not eligible in the first four games this season because of his latest drug suspension. He can return to the field for the Browns game on Oct. 9 game against New England.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Gordon's eligibility is not affected by the paternity issue.

According to court documents, Gordon has ignored several requests and to take a blood test to show whether he is the child's father. He's also skipped hearings.

The Browns say they are "aware of the situation." The team said Gordon and his attorney are working with courts to resolve the matter.

A former Pro Bowler, Gordon has been suspended for 29 of Cleveland's past 34 games.

Lions: RB Ameer Abdullah out 8-plus weeks with foot injury
ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Theo Riddick proved he could be an effective, pass-catching running back last season.

Riddick caught 80 receptions for the Detroit Lions in 2015, his third year in the league.

Until Ameer Abdullah was hurt last week, though, Riddick hadn't carried the ball more than seven times in a game.

That is about to change.

The Lions, without Abdullah for at least eight weeks, are giving Riddick a chance to be an every-down running back in the NFL.

"I think you've seen he's more than capable," coach Jim Caldwell said.

The Lions put running back Abdullah on the reserve-injured list with a foot injury Wednesday, pushing Riddick up the depth chart. (see full story)

Chiefs: Andy Reid says Charles prognosis is 'all positive'
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chiefs coach Andy Reid called the prognosis of Jamaal Charles "all positive" on Wednesday, increasing the likelihood that the injured running back finally will get on the field this weekend.

Charles has not played since Week 5 last season, when he tore the ACL in his right knee. He was back on the field for training camp and has been splitting time with the scout team and first team in practice, but the four-time Pro Bowl selection has not been active for a game.

Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West have been filling in for him .

"You know, I think the longer you can wait with him the better it is," Reid said, "even though I think he probably thought he could play today, or tomorrow or whatever. I just think we'll see how this week goes. Another week I think it going to help him."

The Chiefs play the New York Jets on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Redskins: DeSean Jackson misses practice with knee and ankle injuries
ASHBURN, Va. -- Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson has knee and ankle injuries that could keep him out of Sunday's game against the New York Giants.

Jackson watched practice in street clothes on Wednesday. In Washington's Week 2 loss to Dallas, he finished the game despite feeling soreness starting in the third quarter, coach Jay Gruden said.

Gruden says he had "no idea" of the expectations for Jackson's return, and that "it depends on how he feels" on Thursday and Friday.

The three-time Pro Bowler has caught nine passes for 142 yards in two games this season. Last season, Jackson had four touchdowns and 528 yards receiving despite missing six games with a hamstring injury.
