John Fox: Carson Wentz ‘an Outstanding Young Player'

Coming into Week 1, the Browns weren’t overly complimentary toward Carson Wentz. Their head coach backed the decision to pass him over and one of their executives said he didn’t think Wentz was a top 20 quarterback.

Things are a little different this week, heading into Week 2 against the Bears.

“I saw a guy that can make all the throws,” Bears head coach John Fox said on a conference call with Philadelphia media Thursday. “He made good decisions. I think he was a guy that was very-highly touted coming out, I know he was in our room. From what I understand, he is an outstanding teammate. But I think, all in all, for a first game, he did a great job.”

Now, it was just one game, but Wentz was very good. He completed 22 of 37 passes for 278 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

One of the individual throws Eagles head coach Doug Pederson highlighted from the performance was the key throw on 4th-and-4 in the third quarter. Fox was impressed by that one too.

“Cleveland went zero blitz on him and he rifled a little slant into the slot,” Fox said. “Very accurate. He can make all the throws. We evaluated Carson coming out. He's an outstanding young player, for sure.”

Did the Bears, who picked ninth in April, have Wentz rated highly coming out of North Dakota State?

“Yeah, I think it's pretty fair to say that the other 31 cities in the league had him rated pretty high,” Fox said.

Well, maybe just not the Browns.
