It's Not Perfect, But Jordan Matthews Would Work as Short-term Solution

Jordan Matthews is not Jerry Rice or Randy Moss, but despite what some irrational fans have been tweeting to me tonight, he does not suck.

If you haven't heard, the Eagles brought Matthews back to the NovaCare Complex on Tuesday for a workout and might sign him to a contract because of their dire situation at wide receiver (see story)

No, Matthews is not the ideal fit for this Eagles offense. He has his flaws as a player. He drops too many passes. His primary position is in the slot, where Nelson Agholor plays. He's not a threat to blow the top off a defense. And he's coming off a hamstring injury.

It also isn't ideal to not have Alshon Jeffery back or to have Mike Wallace fracture his fibula after seven snaps in Week 2. But here we are.

There just aren't exactly a ton of options out there right now. It's almost late September, after all.

So as a short-term solution to play in five days?

As long as he's healthy, Matthews could probably help.

In less than five days, the Eagles will take the field at Lincoln Financial Field to play the Colts and after waiving DeAndre Carter, they're left with just three healthy wide receivers in Agholor, Kamar Aiken and Shelton Gibson.

They just need someone who can come in and be ready to play on short notice. They need someone who knows the offense. Matthews would fit that bill and might be a better option than the three guys on the practice squad or Markus Wheaton, who was on the active roster not that long ago. He at least has a rapport with his friend, Carson Wentz.

I don't understand all the Matthews hate. Sure, he has his limitations, but he was an extremely productive receiver when he was in Philly. In his three years with the Eagles, he caught 225 passes for 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns. The only six players who also started their careers off like that are Moss, Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans, Larry Fitzgerald, A.J. Green and DeAndre Hopkins.

No, Matthews isn't as good as any of them. And, no, this isn't a long-term solution at the wide receiver position.

But if the Eagles are looking to bring someone in to play this Sunday, Matthews would be a fine choice.
