Eagles Rule Out 7 Players for Thursday; Pederson's First-team Plans

No surprises among the players Doug Pederson has already ruled out for the Eagles' Thursday night preseason game against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

Carson Wentz (ribs), Mychal Kendricks (hamsgring) Jordan Matthews (hamstring), Mike Martin (knee), Jalen Mills (hamstring), Hunter Sharp (hamstring) and recently acquired Dorial Green-Beckham will not play.

Green-Beckham, the wideout who comes to the Eagles from trade with the Titans for Dennis Kelly, was scheduled to arrive at the NovaCare Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Pederson said Green-Beckham will travel with the team to Pittsburgh to be around his new teammates but won’t play.

Sam Bradford and the first-team offense will play for the entire first quarter and perhaps into the second, according to Pederson. Keeping with what we’ve seen at practice, Allen Barbre will be the starting right tackle, filling in for Lane Johnson, who awaits his 10-game suspension. Rookie Isaac Seumalo will start at left guard in place of Barbre.

Wentz will travel with the team, while other injured players won’t.

“The reason why is he’s a quarterback and I want him involved in every single meeting,” Pederson said. “I don’t want to stunt his growth and I want to continue that whole process with him.”

Pederson said Wentz’s return to practice is still day-to-day. He hopes to have him back before the last preseason game, but it will depend on his level of pain tolerance.

Pederson originally expected Kendricks back on Saturday, but now he’ll be out at least another week. The head coach said there hasn’t been a setback and hopes to have him next week as the team prepares for Indianapolis.
